Small changes to headlines, images, and CTAs can dramatically improve conversion rates. Here's how to test them.
A/B testing (or split testing) is the practice of showing two versions of a page to different visitors and measuring which version generates more conversions. It removes guesswork from website optimisation and lets data drive your design decisions. Even simple tests can reveal surprising insights.
Start with the elements that have the biggest potential impact: your headline, your CTA button text and colour, and your hero image. Change only one element at a time so you can clearly attribute any difference in performance to that specific change. Testing multiple changes simultaneously makes it impossible to know what caused the improvement.
You need sufficient traffic volume for meaningful results. For most service business landing pages receiving 500-1,000 visitors per month, each test should run for at least 2-4 weeks to achieve statistical significance. Ending a test too early based on small sample sizes can lead to false conclusions.
Use free or affordable tools like Google Optimize (now part of Google Analytics 4) or VWO to set up and run your tests. Document every test you run, including the hypothesis, the change made, the duration, and the result. Over time, this testing log becomes a valuable playbook of what works for your specific audience.
