Used correctly, exit popups can capture leads that would otherwise be lost. Here's how to do them right.
Exit intent popups detect when a visitor is about to leave your website (by tracking mouse movement toward the browser's close button) and display a last-chance message. They're controversial because they can be annoying, but the data shows they can capture 10-15% of otherwise-lost visitors when done well.
The key is offering genuine value, not just shouting 'Wait! Don't leave!' An effective exit popup for a service business might offer a free guide ('Download our free guide: 10 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Plumber'), a special incentive ('Get 10% off your first job'), or simply a softer CTA ('Not ready to call? Leave your number and we'll reach out when it suits you').
Design matters. Your popup should be clean, professional, and easy to close. A tiny 'X' button that's hard to find on mobile frustrates visitors and damages your brand. Make the close option obvious and respect the visitor's choice if they dismiss it - don't show the same popup on every page visit.
Only show exit intent popups to first-time visitors who haven't already converted. Showing a popup to a returning customer or someone who's already submitted an enquiry is pointless and irritating. Use cookies to control frequency and target the popup specifically at visitors who viewed a service page but didn't take action.
