Google's AI-driven campaign type can be brilliant or terrible. Here's how to set it up for success.
Performance Max (PMax) is Google's AI-powered campaign type that runs ads across Search, Display, YouTube, Gmail, Maps, and Discovery from a single campaign. For service businesses, it promises to find customers everywhere on Google's network. But without proper setup, it can burn through budget on low-quality traffic.
The foundation of a successful PMax campaign is your asset groups. Provide at least 5 headlines, 5 descriptions, 5 images (real photos of your work, not stock), and a video if possible. The more assets you provide, the more combinations Google can test. Low-quality or insufficient assets lead to poor ad combinations and wasted spend.
Set up audience signals to guide Google's AI in the right direction. Upload your customer list, create custom segments based on search terms your customers use, and add your remarketing audiences. These signals don't restrict your targeting, but they tell Google's algorithm what a good customer looks like, helping it find similar people faster.
Monitor your PMax campaigns carefully in the first 4-6 weeks. Check the 'Insights' tab to see which audience segments and search themes are driving conversions. If you see irrelevant search themes (like 'plumber jobs' or 'DIY plumbing'), add them as campaign-level negative keywords. PMax works best when it's guided by human oversight, not left entirely to the algorithm.
