Word of mouth is powerful. A structured referral programme makes it predictable and scalable.
Referrals are the highest-quality leads any service business can receive. They come pre-qualified, pre-trusted, and convert at rates 3-5 times higher than cold leads. But most businesses leave referrals to chance. A structured referral programme turns this sporadic source into a predictable lead generation channel.
Design a reward that motivates referrals without devaluing your service. Cash rewards (£50-100 for the referrer when the job is completed), account credits toward future services, or gift vouchers all work well. The key is to make the reward meaningful enough to prompt action but not so large that it looks like desperation.
Make it easy to refer. Create a simple referral card (physical and digital) with a unique code or link. Send a follow-up text or email after every completed job with a direct referral link and a message like 'Know someone who needs [your service]? Refer them and receive £50 when we complete their job.'
Track and celebrate referrals. Thank referrers personally when their referral converts, and deliver the reward promptly. Some businesses create a 'Referral Hall of Fame' or offer escalating rewards for multiple referrals. The more you acknowledge and reward referral behaviour, the more it becomes self-sustaining.
