UTM tags tell you exactly where every lead comes from. Here's how to use them properly.
UTM parameters are tags you add to the end of your URLs to track exactly where your website traffic comes from. Without them, Google Analytics lumps all your traffic into broad categories like 'Direct' or 'Referral', making it impossible to know which specific campaigns are driving results.
There are five UTM parameters, but you only need three for most campaigns: source (where the traffic comes from, e.g. 'google' or 'facebook'), medium (the type of traffic, e.g. 'cpc' or 'email'), and campaign (the specific campaign name, e.g. 'emergency-plumber-manchester'). Use Google's free Campaign URL Builder to create tagged URLs.
Consistency is critical. Decide on a naming convention and stick to it across all campaigns. Use lowercase, hyphens instead of spaces, and descriptive names. 'google / cpc / boiler-repair-london' is infinitely more useful than 'Google / paid / Campaign 1' when you're reviewing your analytics months later.
Once you're using UTM parameters consistently, you can see exactly which campaigns, ads, and even individual social media posts are driving leads. This data is gold for budget allocation - you can shift spend from underperforming campaigns to high-performers with complete confidence in the numbers.
